The National Health Policy 2017 emphasized the importance of preparing nurse practitioners and specialist nurses, standardizing their education and clinical training, and strengthening the regulation of nursing practices. In response, the Indian Nursing Council (INC) has developed and redesigned competency-driven, clinical residency-based curricula for Nurse Practitioner programs and Post-Basic Diploma programs in specialty nursing.

Nurse Practitioner Programs

The Nurse Practitioner programs offered in India include:

  • Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care (NPCC): A two-year master's program.
  • Nurse Practitioner in Midwifery: An 18-month diploma-level program.

Additionally, Specialty Nursing programs are one-year residency diplomas offered at the diploma level. One batch of NPCC graduates has already completed the program, while the next batch is currently undergoing training.

Graduates of the NPCC program are prepared to practice in ICU settings as nurse practitioners, contingent on additional registration with the state nursing council, following INC guidelines for critical care nursing practices and institutional protocols.

PhD vs. DNP: Terminal Degrees in Nursing

The highest academic qualification in nursing is the PhD, designed to prepare nurses for leadership roles in education, research, and advanced practice. PhD holders typically contribute in academic and research settings. In contrast, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) focuses on advancing clinical practice, preparing nurses to specialize in specific areas of care.

  • PhD: Research-intensive, aimed at leadership roles in education and scientific inquiry.
  • DNP: Practice-intensive, designed to elevate the clinical expertise of advanced practice nurses.

Globally, the DNP is considered a terminal degree in nursing, alongside the PhD. The DNP program is for moving advanced practice nurses (NPs/specialist nurses) to the doctoral level, making it a clinical-focused degree, whereas the PhD is research-driven.

Impact of DNP in Healthcare

Research from various countries has shown that DNP-qualified nurses lead to:

  • Improved patient outcomes
  • Increased quality and accessibility of care
  • Reduced healthcare costs

Prescriptive privileges will be governed by government regulations and Indian Nursing Council standards. The process for establishing the required legislation is already in progress.

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) has partnered with the College of Nursing, University of Texas to introduce the DNP program in India. This collaboration aims to develop the curriculum, focusing on theory, practice experience, advanced competencies, and career pathways, with a pilot launch at 2-4 institutions across India.

Scope of Practice for DNP Graduates

DNP graduates can expect to take on the following roles:

  • Advanced Practice Nurse (NPCC): Performing duties with enhanced competencies.
  • Leadership Positions: In clinical settings, policy development, and quality assurance.
  • Faculty Roles: In teaching nurse practitioner and specialty nursing programs.
  • Dual-role Leadership: Integrating education and practice within healthcare organizations.

DNP (Critical Care): A Specialized Practice Degree

The DNP (Critical Care) program is offered as:

  • Two-year full-time program
  • Three-year part-time program

This doctoral program is designed for advanced practice nurses, specifically NPCC graduates, preparing them to become specialists in advanced nursing practice. The program focuses on evidence-based innovation and practical application of nursing research.

DNP Graduate Competencies

Upon completing the DNP program, graduates will:

  • Integrate scientific knowledge into nursing practice (e.g., pathophysiology, pharmacology, ethics, psychology).
  • Develop innovative care models that address current organizational, political, cultural, and economic realities.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives in healthcare systems.
  • Demonstrate clinical scholarship through evidence-based practice and analytical methods.
  • Utilize technology to improve patient care and transform healthcare systems.
  • Engage in healthcare policy development to advocate for improved healthcare delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to improve health outcomes.
  • Promote population health and engage in public health activities.
  • Develop expertise in specialized areas of practice.
  • Demonstrate the ability to practice as an advanced nurse in a specific speciality.
