Report on Guest Lecture On "Preventing Suicide Promoting Well Being"

Dr. D. Y. P SEVA Alumni Association of Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Nursing, Pimpri, Pune has organized "Guest Lecture" on "Preventing Suicide & Promoting well being for Teaching, Non-Teaching staffs & students.

In the every day we are come acrossing many situations that we cannot handle many of us are not able to handle this situations, & this can leads to feeling of "Suicides" which is dangerous thinking for us. Many of them can do this & we cannot save their life.

On 7th November, 2012 Guest lecture was organized for Second year B. sc. & Third year B. sc. Nursing in the Lecture Hall No.02. Lecture was started on 9.00 a.m. Mr. Sandeep Kale Lecturer Had given an introduction about the programme. Mr. Boby Zakariya Coordinator, Connecting Ngo introduced their group members. He started the session with a pre-test. Key speaker: Ms. Adhiti, (Psychotherapist Connecting Ngo), had delivered the information about warning signs of suicides, preventive measures. After this discussion was started mainly aims to "Be Free Mind, Be Frank, Be Open Heart, Ventilate the Emotions & Feeling." Many of the students has asked questions, share their problems & the team has clarified their droughts in simple language.

It is good steps for students to ventilate their heart & came out from the situation, after the lecture students have fresh mind they have got solution for their problems. Total 61 students were attainted the lecture. After the session a post test was conducted and pamphlets were distributed

Lecture was ended at 11:30 a.m. Everyone left the hall with positive attitude towards life. On 8th November 2012 second session of Guest lecture was organized for First year B.sc. Fourth-year B.sc. Nursing First & Second Year P.B.B.Sc., First & Second Year M.Sc. First, Second, Third Year & Internship Students in Lecture Hall No.02. Lecture was started on 8:00 a.m. Mr. Sandeep Kale Lecturer Had gave introduction about the programme. Mr. Boby Zakariya Coordinator, Connecting Ngo introduced the students to the NGO "Connecting – help and save life" and their members. The aims and objectives of the NGO were stated. Chairman of the NGO (Mr. Joseph) started the session.

Key speaker: Mr. Ashwinikumar who is a Fighter Pilot in Indian Air Force. He started the session with a pre-test. Present scenario of suicide in India and World was discussed. An exercise was given by the speaker. He selected 4 volunteers from the group. Each volunteer was asked to blow the balloon. Out of 4 balloons 3 balloons burst. Even though the 4th one was automatically winner still he blew the balloon and it burst. Just for the sake of word "competition". Competition leads to stress and if not managed at time may lead to suicidal tendency.

After this exercise the speaker shared many of his life experiences. It was very enlightening for all of us. He gave another exercise i.e. a puzzle was given and everyone was asked to count the number of squares. It was to test self-ability and self-confidence. He gave numerous examples under which circumstances one lead himself or herself towards suicide.

At the end they told us about the NGO and there helpline no. They also told us about various enrollment programs carried out by them. After the session a post test was conducted and pamphlets were distributed. Many of the students has asked questions, share their problems & the team has clarified their droughts in simple language. Total 283students were attainted the lecture.

He played an inspirational song by Celion Deon "I m alive" which boosted everyone with positive energy and self confidence. We all sang together and we all felt a new ray of hope.

Lecture was ended at 11:30 a.m. Everyone left the hall with positive attitude towards life. On 8th November 2012 Third session of Guest lecture was organized for Teaching, Non-Teaching Faculty from College of Nursing & Institute of Nursing Education. Lecture was started on 2:00 p.m. in the college Library. Mr. Boby Zakariya Coordinator, Connecting NGO. introduced their group members & also provided the information about NGO. He started the session with a pre-test.

Key speaker: Ms. Sandy (Psychotherapist Connecting Ngo) had delivered the information about warning signs of suicides, preventive measures. They also demonstrated various techniques on stress reliving. How to handle the students during stress. Many of the staff has asked questions, share their problems & the team has clarified their droughts in simple language. Total 40faculty were attainted the lecture.

Lecture was ended at 4:00 p.m. everyone left the hall with positive attitude towards life. After the all session Connecting NGO team has discuss in short feed back to Principal Madam. They also suggested starting a Peer Education Programme for the students. Madam Suggested Mrs. Nisha Naik & Mr. Sandeep Kale , Lecturer, to take follow up from the NGO. They also promise that they will send a short report about the all three sessions & their recommendation to college.
